Athens Medical Center – Training & Reference Center for the ASI Technique

The Clinic of Large Joints of Athens Medical Center, under the direction of Ioannis Tsarouchas, MD, PhD, Orthopaedic Surgeon and Director of the Orthopaedic Clinic of Large Joints, has now been designated as a Training and Reference Center for the ASI (Anterior Supine Intermuscular) technique for Total Hip Arthroplasty. It is the only Training & Reference Center in Greece and one of the few in Europe for this specific technique, officially certified by Zimmer Biomet.

According to the international certification standards, the clinic meets all the required criteria and offers a comprehensive training program in the ASI (Anterior Supine Intermuscular) technique, addressed to surgeons from Greece and abroad. This program is already underway, with the first Greek surgeons having successfully completed the training process.

The key innovation of this revolutionary method is the use of a very small anterior incision, measuring only 6–7 centimeters. Soft tissue trauma is minimal, as muscles and tendons are not cut, and the duration of the procedure is approximately one and a half hours. As a result, blood loss is limited and, when the patient has a normal preoperative hematocrit, the need for blood transfusion is very rare. Postoperative pain is significantly reduced, and the joint—thanks to the preservation of soft tissues—is stable from the very first day. This allows the patient to stand and walk immediately. Depending on their physical condition, they may not need any walking aids at all. The length of hospital stay is reduced to 2–4 days. Early mobilization significantly lowers the risk of serious complications, such as venous thrombosis, as well as respiratory and cardiac problems. Patients return more quickly to their daily activities and to a normal lifestyle. It is particularly important that the ASI technique is also suitable for overweight patients, for whom other techniques are often associated with significant complications.

On the occasion of the certification of the Athens Medical Center's Large Joints Clinic, the Dr. Ioannis Tsarouchas stated:
"We would like to thank Zimmer Biomet for the trust they have shown us. This certification highlights the high level of training of our doctors, the Group's leadership in terms of logistical infrastructure, state-of-the-art technology, and the effort to improve quality in all aspects of surgical care. Our Clinic has already surpassed the milestone number of 1,500 successful surgeries, with ASI method, a minimally invasive method that offers multiple benefits for the patient"
