Orthopedic Conditions

Joint pain rarely has a single possible cause, and that is where most diagnostic errors begin. Hip pain is felt in the groin but radiates to the knee, and is regularly treated as a knee problem. Back pain and hip pain are confused with one another constantly. A knee that truly locks means something different from a knee that gives way.

What each page covers

For every condition you will find the causes and risk factors, the symptoms as patients actually experience them, how the diagnosis is reached through examination and imaging, and the full range of treatment from conservative care to surgery, with realistic recovery timelines rather than optimistic ones.

When to see a specialist

Pain that wakes you at night, pain at rest, a shrinking walking distance, recurrent swelling, a sense of instability, true locking of a joint, or difficulty putting on shoes and socks all warrant assessment. So does any pain that persists beyond six weeks despite proper conservative treatment.

Imaging is not the diagnosis

Scans show findings, not symptoms. An MRI in almost any adult over forty will show degenerative changes that are not necessarily responsible for the pain. A sound diagnosis comes from history, examination and imaging — in that order.

If surgery has already been recommended to you, a second opinion can confirm the indication or reveal alternatives.
