Reference and Training Centre for the ASI Method
The Major Joints Clinic of the Athens Medical Center, directed by Dr. Ioannis Tsarouhas, is regarded as one of the pioneers in hip surgery. Its most recent distinction is its selection as the only reference centre in Greece, and one of the few in Europe, for training in the ASI technique, which coincides with the completion of 3000 hip replacements with this method.
Specifically, following a thorough inspection and evaluation by representatives of Zimmer Biomet of the way the technique is applied by our surgical team and of the adequacy of our Hospital’s facilities, in conjunction with the large number of successful operations already performed, our clinic was certified as a model training centre for hip surgeons in the ASI method. Trainee doctors have the opportunity to attend operations with the ASI method in person and to become familiar with the special protocols applied in our clinic for patients undergoing hip replacement.
Since February 2019, our clinic and hospital have already hosted more than 50 visiting orthopedic surgeons from Greece and abroad. All participating trainees successfully completed the programme and stated that they were fully satisfied with the level of knowledge they acquired.
What a reference centre means
A reference centre is a unit to which cases are referred by other colleagues and clinics, because it brings together the necessary volume of cases, the expertise and the equipment for a specific technique. A training centre means, in addition, that the unit trains orthopedic surgeons in this technique.
Why case volume matters
In major joint surgery, the relationship between the number of operations a team performs and its outcomes is one of the most consistently documented in the literature. High-volume teams show lower complication rates, shorter operating times, fewer transfusions and shorter hospital stays. This is even more true of minimally invasive techniques, where the learning curve is demanding.
The ASI method
The ASI technique (Anterior Supine Intermuscular) performs total hip replacement through the natural interval between the muscles, with the patient in the supine position and without cutting any muscle or tendon. Because the patient is supine, the surgeon checks the position of the acetabular cup and the leg length intraoperatively with fluoroscopy, in comparison with the healthy hip. The result is a stable hip from the first day, without the classic movement restrictions.
