Orthopedic Conditions
Foot & Ankle
The foot takes the whole of body weight with every step and distributes the load through an intricate architecture of twenty-six bones. A small deformity is enough to upset that balance and make walking painful.

The commonest causes of pain
Hallux valgus, the familiar bunion, is a progressive deformity with a hereditary basis that is made worse by narrow and high-heeled shoes. Morton’s neuroma causes burning pain between the toes, as if you were stepping on a pebble. Dropped metatarsals overload the metatarsal heads and produce calluses and metatarsalgia. And rupture of the Achilles tendon, although not a condition of the foot itself, concerns the same functional axis and is among the commonest injuries in adults who exercise only occasionally.
Conservative treatment
Switching to shoes with a wide toe box, orthotic insoles with metatarsal support, calf stretching and strengthening of the intrinsic muscles of the foot resolve a large share of symptoms. Surgery is reserved for persistent deformity and pain that does not settle.
