Cost of Surgery
“How much does a hip replacement cost?” is one of the first questions every patient asks — and the honest answer is that there is no single price. The final cost is shaped by several factors that differ in each case. Below we explain what these are, so that you can compare quotes on the basis of real criteria.
What shapes the cost
The type of operation. A knee arthroscopy for a meniscus, a cruciate ligament reconstruction, a total hip replacement, a knee replacement and a revision fall into entirely different cost categories.
The implants and materials. The type of prosthesis, the bearing couple (polyethylene, ceramic), the special implants used in revisions and the suturing consumables in arthroscopy significantly affect the final price.
The technology. Robotic assistance adds a cost that is not always covered by insurance providers.
The hospital and the hospital stay. The hospital, the room category, the length of stay and whether a high-dependency unit is needed.
The medical team. The fees of the surgeon, the assistants and the anaesthetist.
Preoperative and postoperative assessment. Imaging, laboratory tests, cardiological assessment, physiotherapy and rehabilitation aids.
Insurance cover
Patients insured with public funds are covered for the operation and the implants in accordance with the applicable KEN (the Greek diagnosis-related group tariffs) and reimbursement rates, with a possible co-payment for implants or a higher room category. Private insurance covers, depending on the policy, all or part of the cost — it is worth asking your insurer for pre-approval on the basis of the procedure codes. Uninsured or self-funding patients receive a single package quote.
Patients from abroad
For patients travelling to Greece, the assessment is first carried out remotely on the basis of recent imaging. An overall estimate is then given that includes the operation, the hospital stay and follow-up, so that the length of stay is short and predictable.
How to get an accurate estimate
An exact price is given only after a clinical examination and assessment of the imaging, because only then is it known exactly what will be done. Send us your X-rays or MRI and your insurance status and you will receive a written, detailed estimate. Contact us.
